Lest we Forget - I Minute of Your time - The Eleventh Hour Of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month

Poppy Field by Kathy Clulow

The Eleventh Hour Of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month

This Remembrance Day is the 91st anniversary of the end of the First World War. It was at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 that the guns of the First World War went silent.

In remembrance of all who put themselves in Harms way so that we could,
and continue too, be able to enjoy the freedoms we enjoy today.

In Flanders fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lt.-Col. John McCrae

Kathy,  Thanks for this post.  I hope that many people see it and remember the meaning.  In other countries, it is also called Veterans Day and Armistice Day.  It was great the way you included the music "Day is Done" or "TAPS"  and the poem, "In Flanders Fields".

Kathy, this post was unexpected and much deserved.  We must always remember these events in our history and the men and women whos lives were cut short so that we would go on.  Thank you.

November 11th... Remembrance Day is also my Wedding Anniversary :-)  But it is a wonderful day to remember all of those that have served to protect our freedom.

Hi Kathy ~ This post touches my insides today. November is the month my father came into the world and also the month he left it five years ago. He was a career serviceman for 22 years. I've been thinking for the last couple of days and made a decision for this month to look for ways to show my support for the Armed Forces wherever I can.

Although your post is in memory of the heroes of World War 1, I would like to expand it to anyone who has served or is serving their country in the name of freedom and democracy.

I think most Americans may have forgotten remembrance day. In the US there is a veterans day celebration, but that is in the spring I believe.

Kathy, I love the background.  It's great.  I also love that poem.  My son's favourite, while in school.
I will remember.

Gary - No matter what we call it it is appropriate that we remember all who serve at home or abroad

Nick - Unfortunately not all share our sentiments.

Patty - it is a pittance in time considering the ultimate sacrifice these men and women paid

Denise - to me remembrance day is for all who put themselves in harms way for us no matter when or where they served and not just those who served in a military capacity

Liz - indeed a time to pause and reflect

Charles - I don't think it matters we when pause to reflect  just as long as we do

Sash - something to think about

The Eleventh Hour Of the Eleventh Day

Just a Pitance In Time

As you watch the video watch the man at the cash register. Our children learn much by example and it saddens me that the actions of the man at the counter is typical of the example some set.

Sylvie - thank you ... for remembering

I saw the video, Kathy.  It's hard to understand sometimes, why people are in such a hurry all the time ... taking 2 minutes out of your busy schedule, whether November 11th, or any other day, may do wonders for you.

Sylvie - the song makes a very strong statement the video even stronger .... It's A Pittance In Time ... I hope I am never to busy to remember not just on Nov 11th but throughout the year

Hi Kathy,

Beautiful tribute to those who gave their lives for our freedom. My GR GR Uncle Tom Smith was one of them...he lays in Flander's Fields and his name is on a plaque at the Menin Gate.

May we always remember the sacrifice they gave....
